DEMENTIA CARE: SCISSORS AND THE MICROWAVING OF METAL SPOONS.

Microwaving wooden spoons won't get you a blog post. No one microwaves plastic spoons. Urgh.

I'm in the business of preparing a supper that sounds more like breakfast. Long story slashed to bits: I microwave the milk for the cereal.

Unless I am busy being busy. Then I put the cereal bowl, with metal spoon, in the microwave. And the milk stays outside.

Luckily, I noticed this before I microwaved a metal spoon.

I was told a story about an incident that defied belief when I heard it. Imagine you are in need of your familiar scissors. They work. Handy. Useful. Familiar.

Unavailable.

So you use another pair. Longer. And you cut open a thing and we'll call it a box. It sits on a flat surface. You place the scissors on the same surface and they swing around without your knowledge.
Maybe not so flat, that surface.

Then you reposition the box, on top of the scissors.

Now you've created a spear trap. Well done. The weight of the objects still inside the box? That is the weight of ages. And it holds your improvised spear in place.

When you turn back to empty the box, you've ambushed yourself. Don't worry about slitting your thigh open. Nature gave you a spare one.

Unless you took out the artery.

One long involved trip to A&E later, to deal with this unfortunate accident/emergency/blatant tomfoolery, you are stitched up and survive to tell the tale to people who can only wince in response upon hearing the news.

Long story about a slash slashed right down - don't microwave metal spoons. And definitely don't turn scissors or anything else into a handy trap.

Around the home, I try to minimise the risk of minimising the risk - never implement safety in a dangerous way. Far from the home, I'm a loose nut, of course.

Short story done: I almost made a mistake this week. But it paled next to the mistake I was told about.

First rule of caring: care for yourself, that you may care for others safely. Second rule of caring: coffee and chocolate are excellent things.
